System size is usually defined by
- Available Budget
- Roof space
- Electricity usage, mainly compared to the solar power generation during winter period.
In residential sector, the most commonly installed size is a 6.6kW system with a 5kW Inverter. Larger systems are becoming more affordable and popular. However, electricity distributors have various size limits for systems connected to the grid.
System size could be limited by your house orientation and available roof space. The average dimensions of solar panels are 1750mm x 1000mm. A 6.6kW system is assembled of 18-20 panels.
North side of the roof is ideal and desirable orientation for solar panels in the Southern Hemisphere as it receives direct sunlight throughout the day and the majority of solar radiation throughout the year. East facing panels will receive the morning sun and West facing panels will get the afternoon sun. South orientated panels receive the minimum solar radiation throughout the year and because of this they are not recommended.
